The looky-likey Mercedes M-Class styling makes it look far more expensive than it actually is. On sale since 2003, the Sorento has proved to be a tough, capable, reliable rival to the Mitsubishi Shogun and the Toyota Land Cruiser.
All models are well equipped; even the base XE has air-conditioning, electric windows and CD stereo system. Engine choices include a frugal 2.7-litre common-rail diesel with 140bhp, or a thirstier 3.5-litre V6 petrol. The handling of the Sorento feels safe and secure, but the vague steering requires constant adjustment.
