10. Volkswagen Golf GTi MkV

Volkswagen didn’t always get the Golf GTi right. The insurance conscious 90s gave us the very mediocre Mk3 and Mk4 versions that were little more than re-badged standard Golfs. The German company appeared to wake up to this in 2005 with the Mk5, which had the performance, looks and special detailing such as the tartan interior trim to justify the GTi badge. Powered by its 197bhp, 2.0-litre T-FSI engine, 62mph comes up in 7.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 146mph.
