1. Volkswagen Golf GTi MkI
On sale: from 1979-1984
The car that started it all, the Golf GTi MkI, introduced us to the GTi badge and a formula that has been imitated by all the other manufacturers on this list. The 70s saw interest in thirsty muscle cars begin to fade so the original GTi must have seemed like a breath of fresh air when it was launched in 1975. The GTi offered higher performance (111mph top speed, 0-60mph in 9.1 seconds), a fuel-injected 1.6 litre engine, sharper handling and it was marketed as a sportier alternative to the standard Golf.
