Outch. Is the Prius really deserving of the swipes it’s regularly received from the car-hack press? The pejorative term “Pious” clearly stuck when it emerged for this car’s predecessor, being possibly justified by a suspicion that it more about making a statement than achieving true mpg and CO2 excellence. Indeed, it left environmental footprints which might easily be replicated, given the right driving approach, in something as commonplace as a diesel Golf (not to mention a BMW 520d, which out-mpg-eed the Prius in one notable trans-Europe test). Despite all the fancy dashboard graphics and cutting-edge hybrid technology of Prius 2, my own efforts on various occasions scored little more than a so-so 45mpg.
