The fortwo is probably the best car on the list if you spend most of your time in the city. It's small dimensions will give enough confidence to park where others wouldn't dare. It should cost pennies to run and in Passion trim is well-equipped. Out of town the Smart package isn't so convincing, as the 1.0-litre struggles at higher speeds.
