Before the UR Quattro was launched back in 1980, Audi's were considered to be reliable and solid but lacking in excitement. Named after the Italian word four, the Quattro was the first passenger car to be fitted with permanent four-wheel drive. It was a rally winner too, as the Quattro was the first rally car to take advantage of rules which allowed the use of four-wheel drive in competition racing. It won rally after rally for the next four years and has now enjoyed a re-birth in popularity more recently for its staring role in the BBC drama "Ashes to Ashes."
