Fancy a closer look? Check out our New Volvo C70 gallery
A true innovator of the four-seater, folding hard top genre when launched back in 2006, the C70 is another model in the Volvo range to receive a facelift.
Face-lift changes inspired by bigger Volvo models
The familiar three-piece retractable roof remains unchanged, but like the smaller C30, the main face-lift changes are at the front. The bolder grille and the sharply-angled sweeping front headlights give the front a distinctive look. This new nose is said to take its inspiration from the S60 Concept first shown in 2009, and is designed to be more closely aligned with the larger models in the Volvo range.
Lights with LED technology
At the back of the C70 the rear lights now include LED lamps, similar to those first seen on the XC60 and to increase road presence even more, a new Flamenco Red pearl finish has been introduced.
Softer hides and higher quality interior finishes
Changes to the interior are limited to a revised instrument panel re-designed to give it a wider, sleeker look with a higher quality finish. Models fitted with leather trim benefit from softer hides and there’s an attractive optional Cranberry-coloured finish.
What's it like to drive?
I drove the 177bhp 2.4-litre D5 SE Lux, which together with the 136bhp 2.0-litre diesel, are expected to account for most of the C70 sales. Whilst the handling is reasonable and performance from the D5 engine is strong, the C70 is best at cruising rather than being pushed hard. Drive the C70 hard and engine noise becomes more of an issue as the D5 engine could do with being a bit more refined.
The verdict:
The changes to the C70 seem less substantial than those made to the C30 we drove at the same time. However, if you’re after a comfortable, coupe-convertible that’s relaxing to drive, the C70 could be what you're after.
