Volvo C30- First drive

Volvo C30

Fancy a closer look? Check out our New Volvo C30 gallery

Think of a Volvo and I’d bet 99 per cent of you would think of the Swedish manufacturers practical if square estates. Perhaps this is why the smallest model in the Volvo range, the C30 has struggled to make an impact with UK buyers against cars such as the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf.

Bolder styling
Volvo is relying on this face-lifted version to tempt more buyers into the fold and the first thing that you notice, is how different the new C30 looks to the last. This is deliberate, as the previous C30 was criticised for looking too similar to the bigger C70 and S40 models. Major metalwork changes are at the front with the bolder honeycomb-patterned grille and the sharply-angled sweeping front headlights. This is a new family look first seen on the XC60 off-roader that is being rolled-out to the rest of the range.

Not much change at the back
Changes at the back are more subtle, with just a revised rear valence that is available in body or contrasting finishes. Overall, I think that the bodywork changes for the C30 are a success, as they make what was already an attractive car look more sporty and imposing.

Other changes for the C30 include two new metallic finishes and the availability of white 17-inch alloy wheels.

More chance to personalise inside
Inside, there are new trim options giving buyers more chance to personalise, but despite this and the feeling of quality, luggage space is still at a premium in the C30.

What's it like to drive?
We hit the Austrian roads in the 2.0-litre diesel SE and at first it’s difficult to spot the differences over the previous model, which proved to be an excellent all-rounder. Volvo are making great claims about the new sport chassis that’s available on the C30 for the first time. The car I drove definitely felt more agile, but the downsides were the stiff ride, sticky gearchange and steering that could do with being more communicative.

Verdict:
To sum up, the C30 is a sporty but quirky hatch which makes most sense in 99g/km 1.6D DRIVe form. If you’re after an alternative to mainstream rivals it’s definitely worth a look.
