Used car of the week: Nissan Micra (92-03)

Used car of the week: Nissan Micra (92-03)
The Micra's rounded styling is too cutesy for some, but it still makes a respectable small car, its compact dimensions (even for a supermini) making it easy to park. Both the 1.0-litre and the peppier 1.3-litre petrol engines are economical and perky around town, and more importantly for a used buyer, they're also very reliable.

Cabin space is tight (especially in three-door models), and the trim is a bit flimsy but Micras drive reasonably well. Many are low milers with elderly previous owners but that's no guarantee they've been properly used or looked after - check the service history. Micras are also prone to clocking - another reason to check the service history.

An oil change every six months is essential if the engine isn't to suffer timing chain trouble, which can cost hundreds to fix, and some cars have trouble with their fuel injection. Older examples may have started to rust, for example in the bottom edges of their doors and in the front cross-member below the radiator, which is an MoT failure item. Few have power steering, but there are CVT automatics out there. If they thump into drive, or the gearlever is hard to move, walk away - this transmission is costly to fix. But provided they have been regularly serviced these Nissans can make cheap, economical and reliable city wheels.
