Search: more on the Lexus IS250 C
Convertible versions of the Lexus IS arrived just in time for Summer, with IS250C versions launched this month. Based on the popular IS saloon launched in 2005, the IS250 C shares just the bonnet, headlamps, door handles and mirrors with the saloon.Fastest three-part roof on the market
Like the BMW 3-Series, the IS250 C features a three-part aluminium folding roof with a four-link mechanism, 15 motors and an amazing 37 sensors. The roof can be raised or lowered in just 21 seconds, and Lexus claim it's faster than any other three part roof on the market.
Elegant styling
Fitting a three-part roof usually means a tail heavy design, but as a result of the clever, compact roof mechanism the overall look of the IS250 C is elegant and looks classy with the hood up or down. Sadly, rear three-quarter vision is compromised with the hood up due to thick roof pillars and a smaller rear screen. Thankfully, front and rear parking sensors are standard.
A relaxed drive
If you're looking for a convertible for cruising, the IS250 C could be the car for you. Just 2,000 units are coming to Europe, and of these 800 will be coming to the UK with the remainder going to the US. It's not difficult to work out this is Lexus's target market and they are making great claims for the refinement, top up or down, with virtually no wind noise or buffeting. To complete the package, the ride is quiet and comfortable even on the standard 18-inch wheels. Apart from the occasional shudder, there's virtually no scuttle shake.
A proper four-seater
Inside, the IS250 C has been designed as a four-seater. However, the restricted width and headroom in the back are a problem for taller passengers. There's the usual excellent Lexus build quality and even entry-level SE models have standard equipment including climate control, 18-inch alloy wheels and leather upholstery. Boot space is class-leading at 230 liters, even with the hood down. It increases to 583 liters with the hood up.
What's it like then?
There's just one engine choice for Europe, the 205bhp 2.5-litre V6 petrol. Performance is best described as adequate. Flick the silky smooth six-speed automatic gearbox into sport mode and things get (slightly) more urgent with the steering wheel-mounted paddles. But, I always felt that I was working against the 1735kg kerb weight (100kg more than the saloon!). In standard mode, the automatic gearbox refuses to kick down unless it's absolutely necessary, which made for frustrating progress on the hilly parts of the French test route. Overall the IS250 C is a competent drive; it's softly sprung but grip is good and body roll is not excessive.
Summing up:
The IS250 C will go on sale here this month, with prices starting from £34,550. An interesting addition to this sector of the market, customers will buy this car for its refinement and attention to detail. Buyers looking for driver involvement and excitement would be better advised to look elsewhere.
