2007 - As the average bra size gets bigger, lingerie brands are increasingly looking beyond a D cup. Mimi Holliday brings the bra up to date with a vintage style available up to GG.
The word brassiere made its first appearance in 1907 in fashion bible American Vogue. At the same time French couturier Paul Poiret was revolutionising womenswear by designing styles that abandoned the traditional corset and in his own words freed the bust. In 2007 our attention turns to Damaris Turl known for her own huge influence on the lingerie world with her signature bow knickers. figleaves.com commissioned Turl to create an exclusive limited edition Mimi Holliday design in honour of the bra centenary. The end result is a tribute that encompasses all things vintage in style. Its brought up to date with a modern size range going up to a GG cup a first for the designer.
"It was a challenge to employ all the crucial aspects into one design - combining true vintage style with modern technology. I used soft peach silk chiffon, gold lace and Swarovski crystals for an antique feel but with 21st century fabrics, fastenings and cup shapes and sizes to ensure the perfect fit. I hope the end result is timeless appeal, says Turl.
Clare Kearney, head of buying for figleaves.com, says, We couldnt let the bra centenary go unnoticed. We wanted to celebrate this milestone in a unique way and Damaris seemed the ideal designer to collaborate with given her bespoke style and design uniqueness. We thought it would be an exciting partnership to produce a range that celebrates 100 years of the bra, marrying the past with the present and allowing our customers to essentially buy a piece of history."
