Tulips are the ultimate seasonal statement and can add a splash of colour or decoration to your home even if April showers are keeping you inside. Fresh, feminine and affordable Tulips can last up to a week if they are properly cared for. The following information provides some handy advice on how best to display them with some clever tips on how to make them last.
Tulip care
- After purchasing a tulip bouquet cut off any white portion of the stem to allow better water intake. To prevent the intake of air into the stems, give them a fresh cut under water. Place immediately in a vase filled with water and fresh flower food.
- Ensure that any foliage from the part of the stem that will be under water is removed.
- Re-cut 1 inch from the flower stems every 4-5 days to maintain water uptake.
- Check the water in the vase frequently. To a cut tulip, the secret to long life is fresh water and lots of it!

- The seemingly whimsical bending of tulips is caused by continuing stem growth and the pull of light and gravity on the flower head.
- Tulips come in more colors than any other flower (except for the dahlia - another bulb flower!).
Top tips
- To straighten bent tulips, wrap the stems tightly in damp newspaper, secure with an elastic band, and stand in deep, lukewarm water with light directly above them. Leave for a couple of hours.
- Although daffodils are another perfect springtime flower do not arrange tulips and daffodils together in the same vase. The sap from the daffodils can kill the tulips.
