I think Dahlias look best when they are allowed to run riot - don't worry about colour coordinating, just let the myriad of shades go wild.
Whenever I see Dahlias I think of those Dutch still life paintings, with over the top flower arrangements, fruit and animals running amuck. So I put my dahlias in a huge gold vase adorned with cherubs, mixed them with some tortuous willow branches and finished off with fake butterflies attached to the ends of the branches. Very baroque.
Dahlias
Dahlias are often perceived as a bit old fashioned and perhaps even dull - a similar fate to the much maligned carnation, but they are the sort of flower that deserves closer inspection, to reveal their truly remarkable detail. They also come in an incredible array of colours.Available from August to September.
