In kitchens, a lot of people are opting for less tiling and are using worktop upstands on the walls behind their base units for continuity and a clean line. Behind range cookers or agas, where tiling was once always used people are opting for more contemporary looks like glass splash backs or stainless steel.
But in bathrooms tiles for more practical reasons are still being used. But the style and size of tiles has changed dramatically over the years - the tile dimension has grown considerably to give a more contemporary and clean look, making spaces appear larger. Think about hotel bathrooms with their large expanse of big tiles. Although, mosaic tiles are still popular, as they offer great colour injections and can be used in small spaces or in small amounts and around corners and edges. They are also great in wet areas as they are slip resistant.
Glass mosaics in dark, moody colours add drama and create a fantastic atmosphere, particularly in candlelight. Elongated white tiles look great too and work beautifully with dark wood veneers.
