There are certain times of the year, generally at Christmas and school holidays, when we tend to need to use all the space in our house. With space at a premium, don't waste spare rooms by storing unwanted junk and nothing else. Spend a little time converting them into usable, multi-purpose areas and you'll wonder how you ever did without the space.

Car boot sale
Clear out small rooms for your guests by selling unwanted items at car boot sales or table top sales – there are plenty around at this time of year, you normally pay about £6 per car and £10 per table and it enables you to get rid of all that unwanted stuff and earn some money in return. Or if you prefer you can take things down to a charity shop, at the one I donate to, I have a gift card so they get an extra 28p from the government for everything they sell from registered people.

Useful shelving
With remaining belongings get storage boxes or those vaccum bags to fill and put items under beds to free up more space. Or put some shelves up for books and smaller items. You might now have a clear room for a small sofa bed or a put up bed that can be used for extra Christmas guests. Once they have gone, instead your room becoming a junk room again – it could be a home office.
