The DSL light on my router is on but I can't connect. What should I do?

The following configuration file can be used for optimising the TalkTalk Echolife HG520 wireless router communications for streaming, the file can be found at: TalkTalk Echolife HG520 Optimiser.

The following instructions will help you get back online, it is important that you try your connection after each step.
Note: If you have reset your modem router and confirmed that it is connected, please ensure that you configure the wireless security settings. You can find out how at: How do I configure my router to connect wirelessly?

Step 1. Restart your router

To restart your modem router, unplug its power supply for 10 seconds and then plug it back in.

Step 2. Re-configure your router

Before you begin, please ensure that your modem router is connected to your computer using the supplied ethernet cable. Then follow the instructions below for your make / model of modem router. The make of the router is usually displayed on its front and the model number can be found on the bottom of the router.

D-Link DSL-2640R

To configure your D-Link DSL-2640R modem router, take the following steps:

  1. Open a web browser such as Internet Explorer, type http://192.168.1.1 into the Address bar and press Enter on the keyboard.
  2. Enter the username and password and click OK.
    Note: The default username and password are both admin (this is case-sensitive).
  3. Enter your TalkTalk username in the Username box, and enter your password in the Password box.
    Note: You will have received your username and password in your welcome letter. Your username is usually your broadband telephone number followed by @talktalk.net. For example, 02079460009@talktalk.net.
  4. If you do not wish to connect to the internet wirelessly, please skip to step 7. If you intend to connect wirelessly, tick the box labelled Enable Wireless (Optional) and continue with the steps below.
  5. Enter a name for your network in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box. This is the name that your wireless modem router will broadcast, so enter something that is recognisable to you. It's important not to enter any personal details.
  6. Enter a password in the Wireless Network Password box. The password should be at least eight characters long and can be a maximum of 63 characters. Take a note of this password, as you will need it to connect other wireless devices to your network.
  7. Select Advanced from the menu on the left and click OK to the warning message.
  8. Under Manual ADSL Connection Setup, ensure that PPPoE/PPPoA is selected and then set the connection type to PPPoE LLC.
  9. Set MTU to 1432.
  10. Set VPI to 0, and VCI to 38 and then click Connect.

Huawei EchoLife HG520s

To configure your EchoLife HG520s modem router, take the following steps:

  1. Open a web browser such as Internet Explorer, type http://192.168.1.1 into the Address bar and press Enter on the keyboard.
  2. Enter the username and password and click OK.
    Note: The default username and password are both admin (this is case-sensitive).
  3. Select Basic from the menu on the left and then select WAN Setting.
  4. Set VPI to 0 and VCI to 38.
  5. Select Yes from the Active drop-down list, and select Routing from the Mode drop-down list.
  6. Select PPPoA from the Encapsulation drop-down list and select VC from the Multiplex drop-down list.
  7. Enter your TalkTalk username in the Username box, and enter your password in the Password box.
    Note: You will have received your username and password in your welcome letter. Your username is usually your broadband telephone number followed by @talktalk.net. For example, 02079460009@talktalk.net.
  8. Under IP Address, set Default Route and NAT to Enabled and then select Obtain an IP Address Automatically.
  9. Under MTU Options set MTU to 1432 and set RIP to Disabled.
  10. Click Submit at the end of the page.

Huawei SmartAX MT882

To configure your SmartAX MT882 modem router, take the following steps:

  1. Open a web browser such as Internet Explorer, type http://192.168.0.1 into the Address bar and press Enter on the keyboard.
  2. Enter the username and password and click OK.
    Note: The default username and password are both admin (this is case-sensitive).
  3. From the menu on the left select Basic and then select ADSL Mode.
  4. Select ALL from the Standard drop-down list and select Enable from the Downstream and Upstream drop-down lists.
  5. Select WAN Settings from the menu on the left.
  6. In the Action(s) column, click the pencil icon.
  7. Set Operation Mode to Enable.
  8. Enter 0 and 38 into the VPI/VCI boxes.
  9. Select PPPoA from the Mode drop-down list.
  10. Set Encapsulation to VC-Mux, set Default Route to Enable and set IGMP to Disable.
  11. Enter your TalkTalk username in the Username box, and enter your password in the Password box.
    Note: You will have received your username and password in your welcome letter. Your username is usually your broadband telephone number followed by @talktalk.net. For example, 02079460009@talktalk.net.
  12. Set IP Unnumber to Disable and set Use DNS to Enable.
  13. Enter 1432 into the Configured MTU box and click Submit.

Philips SNA5630/05 and SNK5630NS/05

To configure your Philips SNA5630/05 or SNK5630NS/05 modem router, take the following steps:

  1. Open a web browser such as Internet Explorer, type http://192.168.2.1 into the Address bar and press Enter on the keyboard.
  2. Click Home in the top right.
  3. In the menu on the left, select ADSL/Internet Settings and then select ISP Settings.
  4. Select PPPoA from the Protocol drop-down list.
  5. Enter 0 and 38 into the VPI/VCI boxes.
  6. Select VC MUX from the Encapsulation drop-down list, and select UBR from the QOS Class drop-down list.
  7. In the PCR/SCR/MBS boxes, enter 4000, 4000 and 10 respectively.
  8. Select Yes from the IP Assigned by ISP drop-down list.
  9. Enter 0.0.0.0 into the IP Address and Subnet Mask boxes.
  10. Select Always Connected from the Connect Type drop-down list and enter 30 into the Idle Time (Minutes) box.
  11. Enter your TalkTalk username in the Username box, and enter your password in the Password and Confirm Password boxes.
    Note: You will have received your username and password in your welcome letter. Your username is usually your broadband telephone number followed by @talktalk.net. For example, 02079460009@talktalk.net.
  12. Enter 1432 into the MTU box and click SAVE SETTINGS.

Netgear DG834G

To configure your Netgear DG834G modem router, take the following steps:

  1. Open a web browser such as Internet Explorer, type http://192.168.0.1 into the Address bar and press Enter on the keyboard.
  2. Enter the username and password and click OK.
    Note: By default, the username is admin and the password is password. If you ever changed these login details please enter your new username and password.
  3. In the menu on the left, under Setup, select Basic Settings.
  4. Set Does Your Internet connection Require A Login? to Yes.
  5. From the Encapsulation drop-down list, select PPPoA (PPP over ATM).
  6. Enter your TalkTalk username in the Login box, and enter your password in the Password box.
    Note: You will have received your username and password in your welcome letter. Your username is usually your broadband telephone number followed by @talktalk.net. For example, 02079460009@talktalk.net.
  7. Set Internet IP Address to Get Dynamically From ISP and set Domain Name Server (DNS) Address to Get Automatically From ISP.
  8. Set NAT (Network Address Translation) to Enable and click Apply.
  9. In the menu on the left, under Setup, select ADSL Settings.
  10. Set Multiplexing Method to VC-Based, set VPI to 0 and VCI to 38. Then click Apply.
  11. In the menu on the left, under Advanced, select WAN Setup.
  12. Set MTU Size (in bytes) to 1432 and click Apply.

Step 3. Reset and re-configure your router

Resetting your modem router will set it back to its original settings. Once it has been reset, you will need to re-configure it to connect to TalkTalk broadband.

Resetting your router

To reset your router, take the following steps:

  1. If the router is not already on, switch it on.
  2. Locate the Reset pinhole button. This is usually found at the back of the router.
  3. Use a pin or other appropriate item to push the button, holding it for a few seconds.
  4. The lights on the front of the router should go off and come back on, starting with the power light.

Re-configuring your router

After resetting your router you must re-configure it as it will not have the correct settings. Follow the instructions on Step 2 again to re-congfigure your router.
