Hollywood blockbusters at the touch of a button for European gamers plus price cut for PS3 and F1 2009 Wii screens
Sony has announced the latest video delivery service for the PS3 - and this time UK gamers can get in on the action. The new PlayStation Network video delivery service launches this November in France, Germany, Spain and the UK. The service will allow movie fans to download the latest releases straight to their PS3 and PSP for viewing at home or on the move.
Sony promises that hundreds of titles will be available at launch including Angels and Demons; Bruno; The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe; Crank 2; The Dark Knight; Dead Space: Downfall; Gran Torino; Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix; National Treasure; Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl; Public Enemies; Star Trek; Terminator Salvation; Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen; Valkyrie; and X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
The video delivery service will be fully integrated within the PlayStation Network, using the same log-in, wallet system and user-interface. Visitors can search for movies by name, or can browse categories such as "new releases", "genres" and "most popular downloads".
Rent a film and PS3 owners will have up to 14 days to watch the movie. Further specifics such as all important pricing info will be announced closer to launch of the service.
Sony has also announced a price cut for the PS3. In Europe the price has been lowered to 299 euros, in the UK to (GBP) 249.99 and in the US to $299 - approximately (GBP) 50 reduction in retail price; contrary to announcements just weeks ago that there were no scheduled price cuts planned.
In a hat trick of Sony news we're also going to be getting a new slim line PS3 model rolling onto the High Street by early September, promising the same functionality in a smaller, slimmer shell. Kaz Hirai, head honcho at Sony Entertainment announced at the gamescom show in Cologne that "It has the same features and functionality (as the old PS3), but now it is 32% smaller, 36% lighter and consumes 34% less power." Sounds great to us!
From slimmer PS3s to super fast racing cars. We've got some brand new screens of F1 2009, the official game of the 2009 FIA Formula One world Championship. The title is exclusive to Wii and PSP with a scheduled release in the autumn, courtesy of Codemasters.
