Company exec defends new Wii gadget and Batman Arkham Asylum screens

You may be familiar with the Wii MotionPlus and Wii Balance Board, but have you heard of the Wii Vitality Sensor? Possibly not. Nintendo's latest gadget received a muted response at the recent E3 show. The finger tip device monitors a gamer's heart rate whilst playing - with the gameplay on-screen matching the increase or decrease in the user's blood pressure.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime reckons that the muted reception to Nintendo's Vitality Sensor reveal at last month's E3 is down to the fact that it's not yet understood with the true potential not being realised until the first software is released.

"Until you have that software, it's tough to understand," Fils-Aime said in a recent interview. "If I told you that you would be standing on an oversized bathroom scale, and having fun doing it, you probably would have said 'Reggie, I don't get it'; and yet here we are with the balance board arguably as the third largest development platform across the globe.'

He added: "I had very similar conversations when we first showed the Nintendo DS. How is it going to work, why a touch screen, voice activation - I don't get it. I had similar conversations about the Wii Remote. How is this going to work, how is it going to work with the games that I want to play - I don't get it.Now I'm hearing something similar for the Wii Vitality Sensor. And all I can tell you is, with the game developers that we have, we will bring forth an experience that you will say 'wow, I get it'."

With Nintendo's track record for innovation it is never wise to dismiss the company - now if we could just figure out when it'll release the new widget we'll start getting excited about the possibilities!

From mysterious widgets to The Caped Crusader. We've got some new screens from Arkham Asylum, the latest Batman game from Eidos that looks like it could well be the big budget blockbuster of the summer. The opportunity for everyone's favourite superhero to get to grips with the likes of The Joker is not a chance to be missed. A release is scheduled for Aug 28.
