UK Street Fighter champion claims the record plus Wii Fit falls from chart top spot and Ghostbusters Wii screens
Regular readers may recall that last week we reported on a forthcoming world record attempt regarding Street Fighter IV. Well, Guinness World Records confirmed today that UK's premier Street Fighter player Zak Bennett has broken into the Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition for the most consecutive wins on Street Fighter IV - with a whopping 108 wins unbeaten.
The successful record attempt took place in London on Friday afternoon. Official Guinness World Records representatives were present to adjudicate the feat, which is now shortlisted for inclusion in next year's Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition. Challenger Hatim Habashi beat Bennett after 28 consecutive wins, but in his second record attempt Bennett raised his game and managed to defeat 108 challengers in succession.
Editor-in-Chief of Guinness World Records, Craig Glenday, said: "We congratulate Zak on his extraordinary achievement and welcome him into the Guinness World Records family. It's always great to see gamers showcase their talent while making a mark in the record books." In our view 108 wins is a legendary achievement - probably the equivalent of spending an entire day in the arcade playing 'winner stays on' and never having to put your hand in your pocket. Mr. Bennett, we salute you!
Staying with Street Fighter IV, the benchmark beat-em'up has managed to topple the mighty Wii Fit from the top spot in this week's all format top 40 videogames chart. Nintendo's Balance Board-based fitness game had managed to stay at number one for a staggering five weeks - no mean feat considering the hefty price tag of the game. But since the mighty Street Fighter was released last week the game has stormed to the very top, on the back of some extremely high scoring reviews. Wii Fit sits at number two with Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War II debuting in third place.
Finally, we've got some hot off the press screenshots of the hotly anticipated Ghostbusters game, forthcoming in June. Penned by original Ghostbusters writers Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd, Ghostbusters: The Video Game brings members of the original cast together for the first time in 20 years. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson lend their voices and in-game likenesses to the original story set two years after Ghostbusters II, with Manhattan once again overrun by ghosts and supernatural forces. Players will have the chance to chase, attack, and catch ghosts in a funny and frightening battle to save New York from its latest supernatural plague. A release is scheduled for just about every platform you can think of.
