Default Washing machine problem

My daughter's Servis M3008W has suddenly stopped taking in water at the beginning of a program. She has tried different cycles and the m/c goes through the motions each time. It will even pump out water if she puts some in and selects spin; it just doesn't take in water when it should. If she disconnects the water supply pipes from the machine, she gets water through them so it could be that at least one input valve mechanisms has failed, but I would be surprised if they had both gone kaput. My daughter is in Dorset and I am in Lincolnshire, so I can't get my hands on the machine. Anyone got any suggestions?

When she's taken the inlet pipe off the machine has she looked at the tiny mesh filter hidden inside the inlet connection on the machine, it should prise out with a small screwdriver or maybe pulled out with pliers.

Does she hear noise at all when she turns it on. (or just maybe the drum turning)

This page gives a phone number & email for free help from Service tech.

Thanks. I'll pass the help number on to my daughter. I did get her to disconnect the hot supply and look at the filter but she didn't really understand what she was looking for and she couldn't get it out of its housing. She says the machine seems to be following programs, just not taking in water. I wondered if there was a sensor which has malfunctioned and is telling the machine the drum is full of water. I know this happened on a machine I had once. The sensor was a plastic cylinder which registered pressure when water came up inside it. If the pipe carrying water up to it became blocked by scale, it couldn't work. I can't see my daughter rootling about at this level

Probably just the hot inlet valve.

The machine takes in only hot water until it detects that it is too hot, then takes cold. So if the hot valve doesn't open it won't try the cold one.

Have you got the manual? - most machines can be converted to run on cold water only - you either move a jumper on a circuit board or swap two wires on one of the switches - there should be instructions in the book. If it is the hot valve tht's gone then converting it to cold only will get it going.

No, I haven't managed to find one online yet; do you know where to look?

I have a Zanussi washing machine. Had it for 10 or more years and its still going strong. I lost my manual so went on to the Zanussi website and theres a link to download manuals. I keyed in my machine ref number but got a message that the manual was not available. I sent an e-mail to Zanussi asking them to send me one and they replied with an attachment of the manual to download so I printed it off (19 pages!!) .

That;s normally my method but Servis went into administration and have closed down their sites. Trawling a few sites such as espares has drawn blanks so far.

Sorry, not a clue unless anybody can interpret the serial number. It was bought second hand a year ago after my daughter saw an advert in one of her local papers.

Their list of spares for the M3008W is basic to say the least. It's all academic now, though, as my daughter has taken the quick option and bought another second hand machine. Thanks for the advice everyone.

I don't know anything about the new one yet but I would bet it won't have cost more than forty quid max, ie less than a quarter of the cost of the cheapest one on your Tesco link.
