...what can I say? Saw it last night at Theatre Royal Brighton, and it was absolutely "memerising". Familiar with the Seventies film (and like a lot of teenaged boys at the time, awaited the "Jenny Agutter moment", to the exclusion of the rest of the work!)
But this production is simply amazing! The horses...the leads ...the supporting actors...the lighting... Unusually, I am unable to fault it. For the "star-gazers" among you, it stars Simon Callow (surely "Sir Simon" in the none to distant future?), Linda Thorson (yes..her from "The Avengers"), and Lily Allen's brother Alfie. Go See! It is on until Saturday I believe. |

It's coming to Bath soon - maybe I should get some tickets.

Almost missed it, but were lucky enough to get tickets (4th row, so a great view
)a couple of days before the performance. Absolutely agree with you, Nick, it was superb. Probably one of the best plays I've seen - and I've seen a lot. Mr S saw it soon after it was written and the memory has stuck with him all this time. It's certainly an incredible piece of writing and as Nick said, the whole thing just couldn't be faulted. I was surprised at the nudity - never having seen the film, I had assumed the nude bit was when the young man was enjoying himself on the horse's back and that they'd chickened out as he only took off his top. lol, I was in for a treat.

Interestingly the film version was criticized for the graphic violence - one of the things I really liked about this production was there was no overt violence, it was all implied. As for the nudity.....well without giving the game away for anyone else who may see the show....its absolutely essential isn't it. The dreadful ending would simply not "fit", if they kept their clothes on! Elaine & I lauged at how, for much of the play we had some "serial coughers" in the audience (why do people do that)?! But at the crucial bit in the stable, there was total silence! Maybe you had a better clas of audience in Bath, than we did in Brighton..thankfully it didn't spoil our enjoyment too much. I thought the whole cast was excellent. Pleased you enjoyed it too! |

It was so good, it will stay with me for many a year, unusual for me but I know it will. Thanks for posting about it as I might have forgotten to book, otherwise.
