The Shilpa Shetty race row
It’s fair to say that nothing has shaken the foundations of the Big Brother establishment more than the race row of 2007. Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty clashed with several housemates, including Danielle Lloyd, Jo O’Meara and Jade Goody. Jo and Danielle were filmed making derogatory comments about Shilpa’s Indian cooking, Jade referred to her behind her back as “Shilpa Poppadum” and Danielle was seen to furiously tell Shilpa to go home.Shilpa ended up winning the show, and claimed she believed the housemates didn’t mean to be racist, but the episode forced the show’s bosses to bring in stricter rules about behaviour and to give the celebrity edition of the show a break in 2008.
