CBB 5 - The bullying row

Name-calling
When Jade Goody's mum Jackiey Budden entered the house she insisted she couldn't pronounce the name of fellow contestant Shilpa Shetty, referring to her as "the Indian" or "the princess" instead.
The chicken
References to Shilpa as different because of her nationality got meaner and more frequent after she cooked a chicken meal for the house. Former S Club 7 singer Jo O'Meara, model Danielle Lloyd and Jade insisted the chicken was undercooked and made derogatory comments about Shilpa. "No wonder I keep getting the s***s," said Jo, while Danielle complained about Shilpa touching the housemates' food. "You don't know where those hands have been," she said.
The bleach
Shilpa was seen applying facial hair bleach, prompting Danielle to ask her if she had stubble. There was also a suggestion she was using it to lighten her skin, and Danielle referred to her as a "dog".
The impressions
Jo and Danielle repeatedly mimicked Shilpa's Indian accent. Only former Steps singer Ian "H" Watkins recognised there was a problem, and told Big Brother he did not like what was going on.
"There's a lot of name calling and petty things," he said. "It's clearly school ground behaviour. It's almost like bullying. It's really, really unfair."
Shilpa also became wise to the unfavourable attention. "Why do they hate me? Why am I detested? I feel like I'm losing my dignity. I'm the only one they are mean to, I don't know why, nobody is mean to anyone else except me. I'm scared to say anything else," she said, while in the house.
The blazing row
Things culminated in a row between Jade and Shilpa, in which Jade called Shilpa a fake.
"You're a liar and a fake. You're a liar. You're not in Neverland here, you're not no princess here you're normal. You are normal. You are normal Shilpa and learn to live with it. "You need a day in the slums. Go in your community and go to all those people who look up to you and be real," she said.
On the same day, Danielle said of Shilpa: "I think she should f*** off home", and Jade referred to her as "Shilpa Poppadom".
The outrage
Complaints about the bullying began to flood in to Channel 4 and Ofcom - which received a record 45,000 complaints by the end of the show.
The Indian Minister for External Affairs said racist slurs were "unacceptable".
Gordon Brown, who was visiting India at the time, apologised about the incident to the people of India.
UK Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell added her voice to the debate, saying: "I think this is racism being presented as entertainment, and I think it is disgusting."
Public sympathy and support for Shilpa was revealed in the form of votes for the downtrodden housemate - who ended up winning the show.
The aftermath
Jade was evicted from the house, denying she was racist during her exit interview.
Show sponsors Carphone Warehouse withdrew their funding - not wanting to be associated with the show.
Jo also denied she was racist when she left the house, saying: "I'm not going to deny that Shilpa did aggravate me a lot - I don't know why. You can't click with everybody you meet. It's not because I'm racist at all."
Channel 4 launched a review into the problem, and concluded they would appoint a welfare officer to observe behaviour in the house to prevent it happening again. Ofcom rapped the channel for a breach of broadcasting guidelines, saying it made "serious editorial misjudgements".
Later, Jade said she suffered from depression and struggled to find work. Her perfume was pulled from the shelves. Jade also later suffered a miscarriage and expressed fears that it was "God's punishment". However, the Church of England moved to reassure her that it wasn't.
The reconciliation
Jade was seen hugging Shilpa as she joined Bigg Boss, the Indian equivalent of Big Brother, which was hosted by Shilpa.
"What happened last year with me and Shilpa Shetty is in the past and I am not proud of it. "I know I have behaved wrongly but that was my yesterday. Today, I have changed for the better and I am here to prove it," she told Indian TV audiences. In the house she was tasked with learning some Hindi phrases and some Bollywood-style dancing.
The reconciliation was completed when Shilpa said her "prayers were with" Jade as Goody left the house early after being diagnosed with cancer. Jade also revealed that Shilpa had since been phoning her to find out how the treatment was going.
