On Portugal V Holland - When it comes down to it Portugal deserved to win because they cheated less than the Dutch. I hope Robben gets the whistle everytime he plays back in the premiership, what a diver, he takes over from Deco as world champion. - Gary350

England V Ecuador

England V Ecuador

On a hot and humid afternoon, the fans were hoping for an improvement after recent disappointing displays by England. Playing with Rooney as a lone striker and Carrick as the holding midfielder, you would've expected England to play the ball along the ground, using a talented midfield to hold and control the play. However, for some reason, the tactics were 'hit and hope', sending long balls and by-passing the midfield. It wasn't pretty and after a mistake by Terry, Ecuador could've taken the lead, with an interception from Ashley Cole preventing a certain goal for the South Americans. England carried on with the same tactics in the second half and without a wonder free kick from Beckham, may have headed to extra time at 90 minutes.
Lampard appears to be getting worse than better, Gerrard isn't his normal self and even Joe Cole appears to be struggling with Sven's strange tactics. Rooney is isolated up front and the support from Lampard and Gerrard doesn't appear to be going to plan. The plus side is, England are still stumbling forward and have made the last 8 with a mouth watering tie against Portugal. Unless England can improve by at least 50%, I would expect the quarter finals to be our last game in this World Cup, but maybe a c**p team could go on to lift the trophy as we've seen Germany do on many occasions...

England V Sweden

England V Sweden

A bit of a rollercoaster ride as England went from fairly impressive in the first half to muppets in the second. The early injury to Michael Owen didn't look to have affected the team too badly for the first 45 minutes with Joe Cole causing the Swedes all sorts of problems down the right, but after the break England simply fell apart. It was pleasant to see Hargreaves running around like a headless chicken, Rooney looking lively up front and Beckham holding his position for once, but Lampard still looks like he's out of his depth when it comes to the highest level of International football. It was only when Gerrard appeared late in the second period, that England looked better than a third rate team.
Hopefully Sven will not be giving out any more half-time team talks and the sooner he departs his £4.5 million a year role, the sooner we can start playing with some pride and grit again. With a shortage of fire power up front, I doubt if England will progress past the quarter-finals, but we live in hope.
