On a hot and humid afternoon, the fans were hoping for an improvement after recent disappointing displays by England. Playing with Rooney as a lone striker and Carrick as the holding midfielder, you would've expected England to play the ball along the ground, using a talented midfield to hold and control the play. However, for some reason, the tactics were 'hit and hope', sending long balls and by-passing the midfield. It wasn't pretty and after a mistake by Terry, Ecuador could've taken the lead, with an interception from Ashley Cole preventing a certain goal for the South Americans. England carried on with the same tactics in the second half and without a wonder free kick from Beckham, may have headed to extra time at 90 minutes.
Lampard appears to be getting worse than better, Gerrard isn't his normal self and even Joe Cole appears to be struggling with Sven's strange tactics. Rooney is isolated up front and the support from Lampard and Gerrard doesn't appear to be going to plan. The plus side is, England are still stumbling forward and have made the last 8 with a mouth watering tie against Portugal. Unless England can improve by at least 50%, I would expect the quarter finals to be our last game in this World Cup, but maybe a c**p team could go on to lift the trophy as we've seen Germany do on many occasions...
