The Conservative party have lodged a complaint with the BBC Trust, claiming that the two roles are 'totally incompatible' and in clear breach of the corporation's rules on political impartiality.
Treasury spokesman for the Liberal Democrats Lord Oakeshott has sided with the tories, claming: "Sir Alan Sugar can't have it both ways. If he's working for the Government he can't have a conflict of interest with his BBC TV programme or his multi-million pound property empire. He should give up both."
It is believed that Sir Alan refused an offer by Gordon Brown to become a Labour minister and instead opted for the role of enterprise tsar. He is also set to receive a peerage despite questions over why this is necessary when he is not to become a minister.
Should Sir Alan quit The Apprentice? Would you be happy or sad to see his departure? Who do would you like to see replace Sir Alan?
